Open Discussion: “Well, that didn’t go as planned…”

This month, the topic of discussion is, “Well, that didn’t go as planned.” You know how we arrange for something to go a certain way, and then we realize it turned out to be completely different? That is the kind of topic we’re talking about.

We’ll start, and if you feel inclined to share, please do! We would love to hear your stories. 😀

The Cupcake Incident – Ruth’s story

Lately, I’ve been baking different types of desserts. I like to do mostly gluten-free, and I found a lemon cupcake mix that tastes great. I have never added anything to cupcakes. I have made muffins with blueberries (my favorite) and strawberries. I have also made chocolate chip cookies. In fact, I had just made chocolate chip cookies a week before I attempted “chocolate chip” cupcakes. I had left over chocolate chips and thought it would be clever to use them with the cupcake mix.

Long story short, it didn’t go as planned. I had envisioned these delicious lemon-flavored cupcakes with chocolate chips spread throughout them. That was my plan.

This is what I ended up with:

Apparently, chocolate chips will go the bottom of the cupcakes and stay there while baking.

My oldest son, Craig (21), happened to be in the kitchen when I took the cupcakes out, and he thought those cupcakes were the saddest things he’d ever seen. He even encouraged me to run to the grocery store to get real cupcakes.

He encouraged me to throw the cupcakes out, but I ate them. And yes, they were still good. I will not make cupcakes with chocolate chips again, though. I’ll save the chocolate chips for the cookies.

Bower Makes his Entrance-Janet’s story

Garfield came to our home about 17 years ago. He at first was my youngest autistic son’s cat, but after Andrew left home he became our cat. My husband’s and my cat. We were happy to have him around. After my husband went to a nursing home, Garfield was my dear companion until he got sick and left us.

I so wanted a cat to give me comfort, and I ran into a lot headwinds against finding the right companion. Out of the blue, my oldest son called me and said his friend wanted a place for their cat since his friend was allergic to cats. I said, “Yes,” to that right away.

Bower became my companion and friend. At first, he never had experienced such a large home and was overwhelmed with the new environment. However, it wasn’t long before he adapted, and we became friends.

He loves small places and likes to drink my water out of my glass. I never finish drinking a glass of water now. Here is a picture of him drinking my formerly water glass of water.

He thinks he owns this place. Just look at him strutting around as if he is part owner of the house.

He also likes to find small places to hide in, such as under the bathroom sink. If there are too many obstacles, he won’t hide there but give him a place of little items inside and he’ll find a place. Garfield was a bigger cat and never even tried to get inside cabinets, etc. But Bower loves those tiny places. He even tried to get in a very small cabinet full of candles. I had to grab him before he got in there, or I would never get him out.

However, his favorite place is in front of the toilet. You have to make him move or you’ll miss the mark.

With all his unique characteristics, we have a great relationship, and I’m so happy he is part of my life. God bless.

So that is our stories to share this month. What about you? Has there been anything you did that turned out a lot differently than you planned? If so, we would love to hear it!

Rules for Teachers ~ 1914

Janet gets a newsletter from a local church once a month, and this information was in it. We thought it would be fun to pass it along on this blog. In case you were wondering what teachers in the western portion of the US had to agree to, below is a sample of rules they had to follow.

1. You will not get married during the term of your contract.

2. You are not to keep company with men.

3. You must be home between the hours of 8 PM and 6 AM unless at a school function.

4. You may not loiter downtown at any of the ice cream stores.

5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have permission from the chairman of the school board.

6. You may not ride in carriages or automobiles with any man except your father or brother.

7. You may not smoke cigarettes.

8. You may not dress in bright colors.

9. You may under no circumstance dye your hair.

10. You must wear at least 2 petticoats.

11. Your dresses may not be any shorter than 2 inches above the ankles.

12. To keep the classroom neat and clean you must sweep the floor once a day, scrub the floor with hot soapy water once a week, clean the blackboard once a day and start the fire at 7 AM to have the school warm by 8 AM when the scholars arrive.
